The Poison Belt, written by Arthur Conan Doyle and published in 1913, is the second novel featuring the bold and eccentric scientist Professor Challenger. Having detected that Earth is about to pass through a deadly belt of cosmic ether, Challenger warns that all exposed life will perish. He gathers his close companions—Edward Malone, Lord John Roxton, and Professor Summerlee—and seals them inside a room with enough oxygen to survive the crisis.
As the poison belt envelops the planet, they watch through the window as every living creature falls unconscious. Believing they are the only humans left alive, they confront the meaning of existence and the fragility of civilization. Their oxygen runs low, and they prepare for death, only to discover the gas does not kill but merely puts all life into a deep, temporary sleep.
When the belt passes, humanity gradually wakes up, dazed but unharmed. The experience leaves the characters humbled, with a new sense of life’s value. More than a science-fiction adventure, the story explores humanity’s place in the universe, the arrogance of scientific certainty, and the need for greater kindness and unity in society.
