本书尝试在大致为莎士比亚五音步无韵体诗的结构内，完全保留原文中所有的细节，意象，比喻和典故，并在其中找到语意和情感契合，化用莎士比亚语句表达，由此在忠实源文意蕴和情感表达的基础上，发挥译者的文学想象和文字功力，结合人物性格、戏剧场景和叙事走向，向英语读者传达出汤显祖时代的戏剧人物的思想和情感，以唤醒目标语读者文化和审美意识，达到有效的文学理解和审美愉悦。
在这部《紫钗记》译本中，译者始终遵循这一翻译策略，在译文中致力达到此一目的。此外，文学作品除了主题、情节、人物、冲突等结构性重要因素外，离不开对人物、事件和情感细致的描写，离不开意象、修辞和典故等语言艺术手段的使用。对于这部中国典籍文学作品，译者力求对上述因素做“重描”，即用译入语最大限度地重现原文细节，语言修辞和典故，以便在读者视界中产生饱满的审美感受。
